Web In Travel Singapore recognizes Kathleen Tan for her impact in the industry
Jakarta, October 30th, 2014 - AirAsiaExpedia (AAE), the unique joint venture between Expedia Inc., the world's leading online travel company and AirAsia, the world's best low-cost carrier, today announced that its CEO Kathleen Tan was recognized by Web In Travel (WiT) as one of the acclaimed "WiT Warriors - The Top 10 Influencers in Online Travel in Asia Pacific" this year. The announcement, which was made at the WiT Conference 2014 in Singapore, was in recognition of leading individuals or "warriors" who have carved out their place in the history of aviation, travel and hospitality sectors in the region.
"I am truly humbled and honored by this award, which would not be possible without inspiration & support from my ex AirAsia AllStars through my nine years of journey with them, and my Expedia team and global colleagues. And special thanks to Tony Fernandes, a friend and mentor for believing in me and constantly giving me new challenges, "said Kathleen.
Kathleen was conferred the honour at a ceremony witnessed by 500 industry experts and representatives from global organizations. The 10th edition of its annual WiT Conference was held at Sands Expo & Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from 28 October to 29 October 2014 with several industry giants who gathered to share their insights on travel and hospitality distribution, marketing and technology. As part of its 10th anniversary commemoration, WiT's award program recognized 10 companies/individuals who have set the pace for change in APAC by bringing in new thinking and who have battled great odds to arrive at where they are today.
Kathleen is no stranger to WiT and the travel industry as her name is synonymous with the amazing story of AirAsia's growth and success. Known as a dynamic business leader, opportunistic marketer and innovative thinker, Kathleen has helped build AirAsia while serving as Tony Fernandes' (Group CEO and Co-Founder) right-hand woman responsible for top-line performance and overseeing up to fifteen departments.
As a pioneer among Asian airlines in social media, Kathleen led AirAsia's social media development which is now ranked as one of the top social airlines in Asia-Pacific and worldwide.
Kathleen's achievements have garnered her major awards, accolades and respect among the airline and online travel industries, including being named as one of the Top 10 Most Influential Woman Leader in Travel in 2013and Marketer of the Year by Web In Travel in 2012 and being called an "aviation legend" by Baidu, China's largest search engine. She is an avid social junkie herself, actively engaging on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Sina Weibo which has over 200,000 followers.
Kathleen was appointed as CEO for Expedia in Asia in January 2013. And in May 2013, she took the Expedia brand to new heights when she appeared in the Asian edition of The Apprentice, one of the most successful reality TV series in the world.

Well, the snake is about to slither away and the horse about to gallop in as Chinese all over the world celebrates the lunar new year this Friday and no one is more excited about the page-turner than Kathleen Tan, CEO of AirAsia Expedia (left).
On February 1, she will celebrate a year since she took up the reins of the joint venture between AirAsia and Expedia. And there's no doubt it's been a disruptive 12 months for the company as the woman, who is known to take no prisoners, came in, some say, like a whirlwind to set it on course for 2014.
Tan is the first to admit that the first six months was not easy. "People were apprehensive, my reputation preceded me, I didn't know the OTA business - 70% of the staff came from that world and I guess they were fearful that I could muck up their careers."
But in true Tan style, she reconstructed and refocused the business - she killed and focused on the two core brands, Expedia and AirAsia Go, moved people around and some out, and gave it a stronger Asian focus.
Which of course puts pressure on Tan to deliver - but then she is no stranger to pressure. In fact, those who know her well says she responds best when she is challenged.
Tan said the new year is about bringing to life all the points of sale for Expedia. "We have localized, done lots of product tests, have close integration with our supply team and we are in a strong position to push transactions."
Mobile is another key area Tan is betting on.
"The packages market is huge in Asia, most of it is offline but there's great potential to bring it online," says Tan.
Currently, 40% of AirAsia Expedia's staff are new blood Tan's taken on in the 12 months she's been boss.

In a debate between independent and subsidiary low-cost carriers, AirAsiaExpedia chief executive officer Kathleen Tan said she believed that the relevant issue remained that the consumers were the winners in this battle between independent or subsidiary LCCs and full-service carriers.
"However, I think the independent LCCs win because full-service carriers creating an offshoot of the main carrier to compete with independent LCCs mean that they are still competing for the same slice of pie as the their FSC counterparts," said Tan.
