"We certainly became aware of how important it was to individuals," said Kathy Swantek, executive director of Blue Water Developmental Housing Inc., who helped with the event. "We were shocked but pleased to get this information to people."

Swantek said the group has added several workshops this year including weatherization, basic job hunting and family fun on a budget.

Not much has been done to the building in the past 50 years, said Kathy Swantek, the executive director of Blue Water Developmental Housing Inc.Swantek is leading the effort to preserve the home.

She said the facility, which provides affordable living for seniors, needs a new roof, new heating and plumbing, an air-conditioning system and many other updates.Everyone has a private room, but no one has a private shower and not all rooms have private bathrooms.
Swantek said the building was constructed in the 1800s.One wing was added in the 1950s and another wing was built in the 1960s.Swantek is hoping to raise $1.4 million for repairs.
The senior citizen home, located at 2722 Cherry St., has a mission to serve the elderly and ensure they have a place that provides affordable services and assistance.
"We met with a number of volunteers to get phase one of our campaign going," Swantek said."We are going to go into the community and asking people for support."
At some point, the fund-raising effort will reach phase two, during which leaders will go into the community try to find support on a larger scale.During the third phase, the group will look for grants and try to find foundations that might have money available.
Swantek said she hopes to start construction in 30 to 60 days.
"We know we need to move ahead," she said.
