When Darius Vaielua last appeared before Pierce County Judge Katherine Stolz, she sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
That was on Jan. 12, 2007, five months after a jury convicted him of second-degree murder in a Tacoma homicide. On Friday, Stolz signed an order setting Vaielua free after the state Court of Appeals for Division II ruled earlier this year that he never should have been convicted. Stolz addressed Vaielua, 27, as he sat in the courtroom gallery surrounded by family and friends. The court also ordered a new trial for Williams, 28, saying Stolz erred when she allowed the jury to hear "prejudicial" evidence of the potential gang ties. He's scheduled to be re-tried early next year.

It was heard in the courtroom of Pierce County Superior Court Judge Katherine Stolz.
Ahmed picked up a fare near a bar on 6th Avenue in the early morning hours of March 8. He was later found lying on the ground on a street in South Tacoma, dead from stab wounds from a knife and covered in blood. His cab and fare meter were still running. Lindquist delivered opening statements on Feb. 3. After the conviction, he said a cap emblazoned with the logo of The Keg Steakhouse and Bar found at the scene was instrumental in connecting the attack to Fuller. He had worked in a restaurant in the chain in 2006.
