BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku is currently the spokesperson for the United National Party.By training he is an economist and academician.He is also a former diplomat and a Governor of the North Western Provincial Council.After earning his B.A. Special from Kelaniya University, he proceeded to New England University in Australia where he earned a degree in M.Ec. in 1978 on a Colombo Plan scholarship.In 1969 he joined the Sri Jayewardenepura University as a lecturer.In 1978 he was seconded to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Employment as the planning director.He was responsible for the introduction of the graduate placement scheme to help ease unemployment among graduates.
In 1983 he was the competent authority of the Sri Jayewardenepura University and in July that year he was its Vice Chancellor.He held that post until April 1988 and created history as the longest serving VC at the SJP.Post-graduate Management Institute, post graduate studies on forestry department, medical faculty and the library complex were started during his time as the VC.In 1986 he became the president of the University Vice-Chancellors' Federation and was elected an executive member of the London -based Commonwealth University Organisation.
In 1986 he was appointed Sri Lanka's ambassador in Japan and South Korea.He was successful in his first attempt to enter Parliament in 1994 from Kaduwela where he became the UNP organiser just before the election replacing Mr. A.J. Ranasinghe, a State Minister.He joined the UNP in 1964 when he was a University student and was elected to the executive committee of the UNP Youth League at the sessions held in Eastern Ampara.In 1971 he became the secretary general of the Youth league actively participating in its policy and program council.He is the director of the Ranjan Wijeratne Political Academy, where politicians are trained.

One of the candidates the Leadership Council considered was Dr Karunasena Kodituwakku, former Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs. Though Kodituwakku lost his seat at the parliamentary election in 2004 he has remained a staunch supporter of the party. Some senior members of the party have pointed out that given Kodituwakku's intellectual appeal, he will be the ideal Chief Ministerial candidate for the Western Province where there is a sizable portion of professionals.

Hi Dr. Kodituwakku , Most of the U.N.P mud campaign was directed at S.B.Dissanayake ( coincident with Susanthika's victory at Sydney Olympics ) .But still he managed to win with a margin well over 10000.What do you attribute to his victory , Is it thuggary on their part , or the fact that the is a politician popular in his electorate. - Chaminda Hettige , U.S.A ( vchd@eudoramail.com ).
