The first panel discussion, "Meeting Challenges, Seizing Opportunities-The Role of Government," featured Dr. Karlin Toner, JPDO Director and Senior Staff Advisor to the Secretary of Transportation for NextGen; the Honorable Aneesh Chopra, U.S. Chief Technology Officer, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; the Honorable Michael Huerta, Deputy Administrator, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); and Maureen Smith, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Department of Commerce (DOC).
added that, in regards to roles and responsibilities, the FAA
focuses on NextGen
implementation and its normal operational issues for the near-term.
Alternatively, the JPDO
is future-focused-providing a national "big-picture" perspective and identifying the implementation path and initiatives for NextGen

reminded attendees of the need for stakeholder involvement in accomplishing the work of the JPDO
