The basement at Starr's Cave Nature Center has been transformed into a teaching tool thanks to Karla Mundt
and a grant received from the Fine Arts League
.During the winter Karla
spent 3 months sketching and painting scenes of a prairie, wetland, interior of a cave and seasonal changes of a forest.Visitors can see the different plants and animals found in these areas.Karla
is a Burlington native.She
has had a passion for drawing since childhood.She attended the University of Iowa where she majored in Art and Recreation.Karla
has been a volunteer at the Nature Center
for 16 years as a cashier for the concert series and a driver for our turtle feeders, her children, Audrey and Danny.
...Karla has worked for the Arts for Living Center for 15 years.She
teaches a variety of classes at the art center for all ages.She
also teaches classes in art exploration with a variety of art mediums like paint, clay and collage.A large number of her
classes are with elementary aged students, mostly kindergarten through 2nd grade. She has been a member of Meet the Masters for 8 years.
This is a group of women who travel to elementary schools in the Burlington Community School District
once a month to teach the 5th graders about famous artists.Karla
is in charge of the program at Corse Elementary.The monthly program begins with a slide show and lesson about the life of a famous artist , then she
leads the students in a project based on the featured artist's specific style.
