...Karl Agar, a mathematics and science teacher at Santa Rosa High School in Santa Rosa, NM, has been teaching for 11 years in the Santa Rosa Consolidated School District.Mr. Agar serves as the school's Math, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) Advisor.He
currently teaches pre-calculus, calculus, statistics, algebra II, and chemistry.Prior to coming to Santa Rosa, he served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Agar's
teaching shows deep content knowledge and enthusiasm.He
is described as having excellent rapport with students and open communication with parents.An inspiration to students and the community, Mr. Agar
encourages students to enroll in college after graduation.Parents have credited him with their children's decision to study engineering or law or join the Air Force.
A leader among teachers, Mr. Agar
initiated meetings with elementary and middle school teachers to work on curriculum alignment to better meet the needs of students.He
works tirelessly to make greater use of technology.Mr. Agar
has involved students in the Air Force Research Lab Space Initiative and the Innoventure
Program through New Mexico State University
In addition to being nominated for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, Mr. Agar received the New Mexico MESA Advisor of the Year Award in 1998 and 2003. Mr. Agar
is certified to teach grades seven through twelve mathematics and science.He has a B.A. in secondary education from the College of Santa Fe, a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Auburn University, and an M.S. in industrial engineering from New Mexico State University.
