A native Californian, Karin J. Hern received her B.A. in Criminology at U.C. Berkeley and her J.D. at U.C. Davis, and practiced for 30 years as the General Counsel/Senior Vice President for several integrated health care systems and organizations, including Dr. Dean Edell's HealthCentral.com, Sutter Health (as Associate General Counsel), the Alta Bates Health System and a Saudi Arabian enterprise, New Jeddah Clinic.
Hern also serves on the Boards of Directors of the California Grand Jurors Association (CGJA), the Marin County Grand Jurors Association (MCGJA), the Marin History Museum, and the Automotive Heritage and Preservation Foundation.
While a member of the Marin County Civil Grand Jury from 2005-2008, Hern participated as an investigative committee Chair, administrative committee Chair, lead author and investigator, contributing author and editor, and served as the Foreperson in 2006-07.
As a member of the Board of Directors of CGJA, Hern has chaired CGJA's Ad Hoc Investigating Committee, Nominations and Elections Committee and Ad Hoc Bylaws Review Committee, served on numerous other committees, and remains very active in legal, legislative, corporate and continuity issues for both CGJA and the MCGJA.
Hern is also a legal trainer for the Marin County Civil Grand Jury (since 2007) and for other incoming civil grand juries throughout California's counties at CGJA regional and local seminars (since 2008).

performs in a women's vocal jazz octet affiliated with the St. Francis Yacht Club
, sails the S.F. Bay and other waters, volunteers in children's theater, travels anywhere she
can, and encourages her
19-year-old son's passion for racing vintage cars.
