"It's not just about saving a school," Eubank Principal Karin Butchart said.
To date, only 215 students are preregistered for next year, Butchart
said a lot of energy has already been spent on recruiting and preregistering students.
"We're hopeful," she
said, "but we're getting down to the wire in terms of funding."
Funding for the school will be based on preregistered students. At least 400 are needed to keep the current staff of 65, she
"One of the worst-case scenarios," Butchart
said, "is that I'm going to lose one-half my staff."
Later, if enrollment goes up, she
would be allowed to hire new staff, but she
said they wouldn't have the training her
current teachers have. Butchart
disappointed the brochures weren't mailed out two weeks ago to give families plenty of time to consider the new academy and register before decisions are made on the school's budget this spring.
"I'm a little concerned about the timing of this," she
parents "are feeling a little calmer, I guess."
