Kari Salin, Ruukki's application manager for the Wear applications segment, explains the company's solution for tipper body manufacturers: "In Ruukki's tipper body concept, the side-walls are produced by laser welding cut-to-length, thin wear-resistant Raex to thin wide sheets, which can also be bent to customer specifications.
Ruukki's laser welding also enables a combination of different steel grades and material thicknesses into one ready-to-weld component." "Replacing the traditional thick quarto plates with a thinner material creates a lighter end-product. Benefits for end-users include higher payloads and savings in fuel consumption. Our customers have typically achieved a weight saving of over 10% by using thin, laser-welded Raex sheets," continues Salin.

Direct-quenched steel is used, for example, in lifting equipment, trucks, buses, train wagons and coaches, as well as in various protection applications. "It's thanks to special steels that savings can be made in fuel and lifecycle costs. In addition, special steels increase performance. Thin, high-strength steel enables higher aerial platforms," says Salin. Both special steel grades are used in the tipper bodies and frame structures of trucks.
