U.S. Census: No Rowers in America [cached]

Karen Solem, Founder and Publisher surprised us: "Sure, what information would you like?"She even sounded like she worked for a government agency, from a neat oak desk, in a row of other neat desks in some big government building (funny thing: she actually does work for the U.S. Government in the largest statistics producing Department in the world).

Karen started: "The Rower's Almanac produced a National Survey in 2004, interviewing over 1,000 respondents, from 404 different clubs, in 35 states and 235 cities, the survey covers topics ranging from daily rowing activities to demographic makeup, purchasing behavior, coaching and organization.
Karen explained: "The science is pretty sophisticated; you might need to talk with our Survey Director if that's what you're interested in but I can tell you - these estimates are based on an extremely robust random stratified sampling methodology verified against two independent sources of additional census-like, nationally-collected data [phewph].We applied standards and statistical processes equal or better than what you would find in the Fortune 500 - that's why the rowing industry uses us."She went on to explain more about the science, but quite honestly - if you're interested you can call her.It sounded very sophisticated to us - and she certainly left us convinced that she knows the difference between good and bad research methodology.
Karen commented, "One person we talked to accused us of undercounting the sweep population.
Karen assured us, they would not have to read 998 pages to get to the answer.
Watch for coming articles from the survey covering market size, and coach roles and organization.
