State health officials don't track the numbers of West Nile virus cases that also have chronic health problems because a health condition such as diabetes isn't a risk factor for West Nile virus, said Karen Kelso, assistant state epidemiologist with the Office of Public Health in New Orleans.
"Some of the other (age groups) have that as well.The elderly, just like with influenza, are just more susceptible to complications."
