Karen B. Gokay, Esq., director, provides a variety of workshops to Berks County school districts and non-profit organizations about the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), evaluation and supervision, and preventing harassment in the workplace.
also serves as a resource for school districts on issues regarding various aspects of employment law, teacher certification, teacher qualifications under the No Child Left Behind Act, and paraprofessional qualifications under Pennsylvania's Chapter 14 involving special education.
Karen B. Gokay, Esq., serves the BCIU as director of Human Resources and Public Relations.
She came to the intermediate unit in December 1999, after working for a number of years as director of human resources/legal counsel for the Pennridge School District in Bucks County.
also has worked as an education and employment law attorney providing consultation and legal services to school districts, intermediate units, and career and technology centers throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
She holds a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and a bachelor's degree in government, with a minor in English, from Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas.
She serves as a member of the Berks Community Action Program (BCAP) Board of Directors and is an active member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Personnel Administrators (PASPA), the Central Pennsylvania Association of School Personnel Administrators (CPASPA), and the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA).
Karen also is a member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials (PASBO) Human Resources Committee.
As a member of that committee, Karen
has helped edit a variety of publications.
also has prepared and/or presented a number of workshops on evaluation, supervision, payroll administration, and personnel management.
