Recorder/Micky Bedell SOUTH DEERFIELD - In musical notation, a coda signifies the end of a piece, and that's what Thursday night's spring concert at Frontier Regional School was for longtime band director Karen Atherton, who will retire in June after 28 years with the school. Gabrielle Warren, a senior who has had Atherton as a band teacher since seventh grade, helped plan the send-off surprise by inviting the alumni and secretly copying old pictures from Atherton's office to use in the slide show, which was shown in the cafeteria during an after-concert reception. Warren said Atherton has routinely gone above and beyond the call of duty, coming in to school early in the morning and offering free music lessons both during and after the school day. Autumn May, a clarinet player from the class of 1998, said Atherton served as her inspiration to pursue a bachelor's degree in music. It wasn't just students who heard from Atherton about the value of music and the arts. Modestow said Atherton went beyond just teaching music to create a community within her classroom and defend the arts and music programs before the administration.
