Karen Andreas is considered the woman to go to for answers about the bromeliad. For FLORIDA TODAY So it was for former Brevard County Commissioner Karen Andreas."I saw one at a friend's house in Merritt Island, and the addiction was born," said Andreas, speaking about bromeliads, the gorgeous plants that sparked a 20-year love affair that shows no sign of fizzling.Andreas will be talking about her favorite subject at the Sea Rocket Florida Native Plant Society meeting on Wednesday. In bromeliad circles, Andreas -- the chairwoman of the Florida Council of Bromeliad Societies, a three-time president of the Bromeliad Society of Central Florida and a member of the board of Bromeliad Society International -- is considered the woman to go to for answers on the delightful plants that amazingly do well both in and out of soil. She and her husband run the council's extensiveWeb site, which includes thousands of photos of the different species."They get very little nutrition from the roots," Andreas said."Brevard is the northernmost range of the weevil," Andreas said.Andreas sees a comparison between tending to bromeliads and working with county commissioners."They both can be very prickly," she joked.
