The countywide nonprofit agency CARES (short for Community Aging & Retirement Services Inc.) charges $16 an hour for simple companion care, which means staying with an elderly person who is able to get around the house without much assistance, said Karen Alvarez, the agency's administrator of home health care. The agency charges $17 an hour if the worker needs to prepare meals or help an older person to the bathroom.CARES sends a nurse out to the home in advance to evaluate the care level required, Alvarez said.So people wanting respite care over New Year's should call right away. Some agencies require a minimum stay of three or four hours. So make sure to ask when calling agencies (listed under "home health care" in the Yellow Pages), Alvarez said.
