Kara Kelty, Member Head of School, BASIS Flagstaff

Kara Kelty grew up believing that public service was an honorable way to serve both her community and her country. Upon graduating from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts with a degree in Political Science, Kara entered the U.S. Peace Corps. After completing her initial commitment to the Peace Corps in both the Philippines and Guatemala, Kara extended her service in order to work as a visiting professor at the University of San Carlos, in Huehuetenango, Guatemala and later worked as an educator with prospective Peace Corps volunteers. Kara has 18 years of experience managing programs, people and resources. She has been involved in educational programming at both ends of the spectrum. While receiving an M. Ed. from Northern Arizona University, she worked with university students, providing access to student services and identifying and removing obstacles to their success. In 2003 Kara became the Director of Success by 6 for the United Way of Northern Arizona, writing four successful grants to fund early education totaling $530,000 and increasing quality and access to pre-school programs regardless of background. Kara Kelty also served six years as a Flagstaff City Councilmember and in 2008 was selected to be a Marshall Memorial Fellow. Kara lives with her husband and two children in Flagstaff.
