Dr. Thapar received his medical degree from the University of Calgary.
He completed his residency training at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada, where he also completed a PhD in pituitary tumor biology.

Dr. Kamal Thapar is a Board Certified Neurosurgeon specializing in complex reconstructive spine surgery, minimal access spine surgery, revision spine surgery, pituitary tumor surgery, brain tumor surgery and skull base surgery.

was one of five neurosurgeons worldwide to receive the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies'
Young Neurosurgeon Award, an award given twice per decade for neurosurgeons under the age of 40 who have made significant contributions to the field.
He was named the William P. Van Wagenen Fellow by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the most prestigious fellowship awarded any graduating neurosurgical resident in North America.
He also served as the lead investigator of the NASA and the Canadian Space Agency endocrine study sections to study the effects of spaceflight on the pituitary gland and endocrine system in Space Shuttle astronauts.
