Dr Justin Davies
Justin Davies is a Walport Clinical Lecturer and Hononary Consultant Cardiologist at the National Heart and Lung Institute. His main research interests include the development and application of pioneering technological developments in engineering to aid understanding of disease mechanisms, and in the diagnosis of pathological disease states. Justin has used mathematical modelling to aid understand of the mechanisms which lead to increased blood pressure which accompany ageing and pathological disease states, and in the development of non-invasive and invasive techniques to assess the interaction between the coronary microcirculation and the aorta to aid diagnosis of myocardial, valvular and coronary disease states. After completing his undergraduate training at Imperial College, he was awarded a British Heart Foundation research fellowship to undertake a PhD in 2003. Since then, he has trained in interventional cardiology with a specialist interest in physiological and structural assessment of coronary disease states. In 2008, he was appointed as a Walport Clinical Lecturer to support his research activities alongside his ongoing clinical commitments.

New method for assessing arterial health improves patient experience - Imperial Innovations

www.imperialinnovations.co.uk [cached]

The multi-centre study was led by Imperial College London's Dr Justin Davies (NHLI).
Both iFR and FFR enable clinicians to assess artery health by measuring the pressure loss caused by the narrowing of blood vessels; the difference lies in FFR's reliance on the use of vasodilators: drugs that open the blood vessels for easier measurement. These drugs, however, can cause severe crushing pain, low blood pressure and breathing difficulties, and adds more time and costs on to the procedure. In contrast, iFR does not require vasodilators, which could lead to reduced procedure time and costs for hospitals, and fewer side effects for patients. The technology, developed by Dr Davies and his team, was licensed to Philips Volcano by Imperial Innovations, the College's technology transfer partner. The data from DEFINE-FLAIR will be further analysed by Dr Davies and his team to to fully compare the costs of iFR and FFR. They will also work to combine data from another study testing iFR outcomes, SWEDEHEART, with their own. The two groups of researchers will work together to conduct a follow-up analysis combining the data from the two studies in a meta-analysis of primary outcomes that will include approximately 4,500 patients. Lead author Dr Justin Davies, Clinical Research Fellow at the National Heart & Lung Institute said:

Justin Davies The instantaneous wave-Free Ratio (iFR) calculated over this period produces a drug-free index of stenosis severity that is comparable to FFR," said ADVISE principal investigator Justin Davies, an interventional cardiologist at National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London.
