While still a student at Peabody Conservatory, Julian Martin began a career that has taken him to major halls around the globe. Endorsements have followed from the world press, from Buenos Aires, Caracas, and Los Angeles to Florence, Moscow, and Tokyo. A native of Alabama, Martin received his early training from Beverly Gibbons and conductor Vernon Raines.
Martin has recorded with the late violinist Berl Senofsky on the Cembal d'Amour (Historic Series) label.
After teaching at Oberlin Conservatory for six years, Martin joined the faculty of Peabody Conservatory in 1987. He was appointed to The Juilliard School in 1999 where he currently maintains a full-time position in addition to his Peabody post.
Yamaha Provides C7 Grand Piano To Gijon International Piano Festival, 13 Nov 2009 [cached]
"The appearance of such a fine quality Yamaha made a significant contribution to the success of our festival," said Julian Martin, Artistic Director, Gijon International Piano Festival. "The piano behaved beautifully; it filled the 350-seat auditorium with a wide range of nuance, power and transparency. It was beautifully prepped by Yamaha's technician. Over several evenings, as it was played by more than 30 young pianists, it held its tuning beautifully," added Martin, who is a member of the piano faculty at The Juilliard School.
"In both cases, the fine acoustics of the halls were matched by the amplitude, clarity and radiance of the wonderful instrument," noted Martin.
The festival chose Yamaha because, according to Martin, "we wanted to establish an ongoing relationship with a major company, one with worldwide visibility, and we wanted one that would be user-friendly to a wide range of students and young professionals."

Julian Martin Self-taught as a child, Julian played piano in a variety of pop and jazz bands, and at the St David's Hotel and Spa whilst working in the steel and health industries.
When he became MD of the Radio Wales comedy show "The LL Files", he decided to add musical variety by additionally teaching himself the trumpet, guitar, accordion and bass! It was around this time that he became a full-time musician and started teaching on the Jazz Course at Cardiff University.
In 2007, he created the score for the comedy/horror movie "Expiry Date" and also founded the Wales Jazz Composers' Orchestra, a 23-piece ensemble for which he wrote and conducted. The band toured Wales in 2008 and was featured on the main programme of the Brecon Jazz Festival.
Julian continues to write scores for films and television programmes, and has also published an album of original jazz tunes for Boosey and Hawkes, and a book of jazz studies for pedal harp!
