Juli Brussell owns The Farm Gate, a consulting agency specializing in sustainable agricultural enterprise development and food systems issues.She currently serves as program director for the Community Food and Farming Systems program at the Illinois Stewardship Alliance, where she is responsible for developing and coordinating the Illinois Sustainable Food Policy Council.She recently coordinated the Small Farm Enterprise Project at the University of Illinois, a SARE-funded project.
Ms. Brussell serves on the Board of Directors for the Organic Farming Research Foundation, the steering committee for the Scientific Congress on Organic Agriculture, and on the Illinois Small Farm Task Force.She and her husband Kevin, farm 500 acres in southeastern Illinois raising organic crops, forages, and beef cattle.She served as a delegate to the two Illinois Ag Assemblies held in recent years and sits on the Rural Economic Development Working Group for the Illinois Council on Food and Agriculture Research.
She holds a Master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with research in on-farm processing and value-added agriculture, and is ABD in her doctorate in geology and archaeology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.In 2001, Ms. Brussell taught the first NXLeveL Agricultural Entrepreneurship business planning course in Illinois and has developed and taught numerous courses and workshops for the Organic University and the Upper Midwest Organic Farming Conference.She presents seminars on topics in sustainable food systems and business for organizations and institutions and is currently engaged in training as a Holistic Management Educator through the Allan Savory Center for Holistic Management.
