Unlike many professionals, shattering myths is one of the first things Judy Callihan
needs to do when she
talks to potential customers.Callihan is a hypnotherapist and owner of Success Hypnotherapy in Old Town Temecula.
"People's only exposure, for the most part, to hypnosis or hypnotherapy is that they have seen a stage show… [where people] appear to be totally out of control, or they've seen some funky movie where somebody waves a watch in front of their face and they start walking around like zombies," said Callihan
."The stage shows… are kind of a disservice to clinical hypnotherapy."
"It gives the perception that they have no control anymore… for most people that's very disconcerting," said Callihan
."Truly, truly what hypnosis does is it gives them the ability to be back in control of those habits and those behaviors that they want to change." Callihan
has a knack for explaining how hypnosis affects everyone in their daily lives.
services to those in the medical field - although she
emphasizes that she
does not diagnose medical problems - rather than the entertainment aspect many expect."I'm held under the same code of ethics as a psychologist, so I'm not going to be doing anything funky with people." Callihan
works with her
clients to eliminate the habits they don't like by replacing them with tools they can use instead of returning to their old pattern or replacing it with another negative habit. Part of Callihan's success can be attributed to her 2,000-plus hours of training, including continued education, and by being the only hypnotherapist in Riverside County who is on Blue Cross Healthy Extensions, according to Callihan. She
also believes she
has been mentored by the field's best practioners.
Clients have ranged from age 5 to 89.One of Callihan's
most satisfying clients was a woman experiencing Irritable Bowel Syndrome for approximately nine years. The woman was at the point where she
would rarely go out in public and had eliminated most foods from her
diet.Within two months of hypnosis with Callihan
, the woman was back to normal. Callihan has several certifications and is a member of many organizations. She
treats a wide range of problems, including smoking, weight management, habits, health, relationships, stress and one's success.
