With a decade of legal training and practice under her belt and currently serving as a senior executive with Canada's oldest civic art gallery, Judy Slivinski will provide a common-sense primer on the skills and perspectives needed to be effective at the negotiation table (actual or virtual). With plenty of illustrative examples, you will discover how to establish common ground, identify potential benefits and pitfalls, assess your own and your partner's motivations, recognize and respect limitations, move through log jams and, ultimately, document and fulfill your agreement. Expect to be inspired to bring greater confidence, collaboration and creativity to your future negotiations.

Judy Slivinski - Director of Development at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg

Judy Slivinski has over 20 years' experience in leadership, management, research and training in Canada's arts and cultural sector. In her current role at Winnipeg Art Gallery, she is stewarding productive partnerships as the WAG moves beyond its 100th anniversary celebrations and into an active capital campaign.
Judy Slivinski:For me it has been a dialogue between peers.
Judy Slivinski:My challenge comes from knowing that we can talk all day about best practices and the way things ought to be done, but their progress in moving in those directions will be seriously compromised by the chronic shortage of resources in these smaller organizations.
Judy Slivinski:An opportunity for a plug! In my home city of Winnipeg, we have a tremendous volume and diversity of arts and cultural activity. We have had a great deal of artistic innovation in the two decades that I have been working in the arts, with our province-wide participation in the annual Culture Days celebrations; with activity surrounding Winnipeg being named the Cultural Capital of Canada 5 years ago; with cultural programming in connection with our hosting of the Pan Am Games in 1999; with one of the world's finest New Music Festivals, now in its third decade; with the ever-growing summer festival scene that includes the Winnipeg Folk Festival and the largest multicultural festival in the world - Folklorama; with our major arts institutions continually innovating at home and on tour (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Manitoba Opera, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers, to name a few); and with several internationally recognized artists working here (Guy Madden, Marcel Dzama, Wanda Koop, James Ennes, etc.). With many important schools here, especially in dance, and wonderful philanthropists and supportive corporate citizens, I am confident that the next generation of artistic innovators will soon be making their mark.
What's one tip you would pass on to someone starting out in development or managing a board?
Judy Slivinski:Human beings will be your greatest asset and your greatest challenge.
