Her sister, Judy McDonnell, is a sociology professor at Bryant.Interviewed before her speech, McDonnell said she first heard about Galactica while she was having lunch with her agents at Spago, the trendy Los Angeles restaurant. They told her they had an offer for her to do a mini-series, which pleased McDonnell because that usually means a decent payday. She asked them what it was about. They told her it was a "re-imagining" of Battlestar Galactica, which aired on ABC back in 1978."I laughed," McDonnell said."I had trouble imagining myself in a sci-fi series; I'm like the earth mother.I thought they must have been thinking of someone else."They were not, and once McDonnell read the script, she was won over.McDonnell plays a low-ranking Cabinet member who gets elevated to the presidency because she was lucky enough to be in space when the Cylons devastated humanity. She credits executive producers Ronald Moore and David Eick with creating a female leader without sentimentalizing her on one hand or demonizing her on the other.McDonnell, whose movie credits include the alien invasion blockbuster Independence Day, said she's been watching a little more science fiction since starting on Galactica - she likes Heroes, for example. And she said she's also become more interested in shows that portray political leadership, such as 24 and the now-cancelled Commander in Chief and The West Wing."Ron and David are very progressive and politically astute human beings, and they have consciously gone after the very issues that we now face," McDonnell said."When you have two adults handling life-or-death issues, you either kill each other or develop intimacy," McDonnell said.McDonnell, 54, grew up in Pennsylvania and later upstate New York.At her father's suggestion, she took a theater course in high school and became a theater major when she went to the State University of New York at Fredonia.

We had a lot of support from faculty and staff; Judy McDonnell, a professor of sociology and one of the founders of Bryant Pride, spent a significant amount of time trying to convince the administration of the benefits of gender neutral housing.
