Electricity Company of Ghana's Managing Director Jude Adu-Amankwah said the first phase of the country's Sunon Asogli thermal gas-fired plant, expected to initially produce around 200 MW, would be completed before the end of the year.

Unlike other countries on the continent, Ghana, which produces around 2 000 MW at the moment, more than the current demand of 1 500 MW, has not been suffering from recent power shortages, but Adu-Amankwah said it needed to keep on investing in the sector to avoid the power cuts seen in the past.
"We've gone through very turbulent times and we've learned our lesson... you have to plan ahead because the consequences can be very bad, both politically and economically," he said.
