Juan M. Berrios - Solo Tenor Horn

Juan M. Berrios is a horn player and an aspiring conductor currently pursuing degrees in Music Education (BME) and Horn Performance (BM) at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL. He is a Music Scholarship recipient and has received several awards in the past few years from the UCF Music Department including the highly prestigious Presser Foundation Scholarship (2008). Most recently, Juan was unanimously selected as the winner of the annual UCF Performance Excellence Award Competition and was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Aspen Music Festival and School in 2009.
Juan is an active performer and student at the University of Central Florida as well as an active freelance musician and clinician/private instructor in the Central Florida area. He has performed as principal horn with the UCF Symphony Orchestra, UCF Chamber Orchestra, and UCF Wind Ensemble since 2006 as well as the Colbourn Brass Quintet and other chamber ensembles.
Juan has been a featured soloist with the BBCF on numerous occasions, most recently on the band's latest CD recording. In addition to performing at UCF and with the BBCF, he has performed with the Villages Community Symphony Orchestra, the Space Coast Oratorio Society, and will perform as a regular member of the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra on their 2009-10 inaugural season.
Juan has attended/performed in master classes with Eli Epstein, David Wakefield, John Zirbel, Kendall Betts, Philip Myers, Richard Chenoweth, the members of the American Horn Quartet (Charles Putnam, David Johnson, Geoffrey Winter, and Kerry Turner), Alex Shuhan and the Boston Brass.

Juan holds professional memberships to the Music Educators' National Conference (MENC), the Florida Music Educators' Association (FMEA), and the International Horn Society (IHS).

Originally from Bayamón, Puerto Rico, Juan Berrios began his musical education in Kissimmee, Florida as a 6th grade beginning band student. He went on to study Music Education and Performance at the University of Central Florida, where he was the recipient of several awards including the Presser Foundation Scholarship and the Performance Excellence Award. Juan also spent summers studying as a fellowship and full-scholarship recipient at the Music Academy of the West and the Aspen Music Festival and School, two of the most prestigious summer music festivals in the country. Juan has performed with a variety of musical ensembles ranging from symphony orchestras to British style brass bands. Some of these include the Sarasota Orchestra, Sarasota Ballet, Brevard Symphony, Palm Beach Symphony, Orlando Philharmonic, the Tumucua Jazz Orchestra, the Horns & Pipes Brass Ensemble, and the award winning Brass Band of Central Florida. In addition, he has shared the stage with the Boston Brass and the Brass All-Stars Big Band, the Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass, and performed as guest principal horn of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. A passionate music educator and avid conductor, Juan enjoys working with students of all ages, staying active in the Central Florida area as a private teacher, brass instructor, and guest clinician/conductor.
When not touring with the Dallas Brass, Juan enjoys teaching, cooking, and bowling. He lives in Kissimmee, FL with his wife, a flute player and elementary school music teacher. Juan is a Buffet Crampon performing artist and plays on a Hans Hoyer french horn and a Besson Tenor Horn.
