"This outcome accentuates the importance of self-advocacy and calm, clear communication," said J.T. Thompson, a spokesman for Smuttynose Brewing of Hampton.
Thompson said advocacy in Washington by New Hampshire's U.S. Senators, Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen, helped change the course of bureaucratic regulation. Thompson said each of the 1,000 batches of beer Smuttynose brewed last year used 2,500 to 3,000 pounds of dry grain. "At the very least, we'd have to find a place to put all that," Thompson said. "We'd either need (a huge) compost pile or to make arrangements to dump hundreds of thousands, if not millions of pounds of spent grain, into landfills," Thompson said. "It's a waste." "I was at a craft brewers conference in Denver, and this was a big topic of conversation," Thompson said.

JT Thompson, Minister of Propaganda
JT is a very proud native of North Carolina. How he ended up in frosty New Hampshire is a tale best saved for a few pints. JT came to Smutty from our sister brewpub, the Portsmouth Brewery, after having worked previously at two breweries in Pennsylvania, in addition to a stint as a graduate student in Library Science. He is an American Brewers' Guild graduate. After four and an half years of production brewing at Smuttynose, JT became Smuttynose's first Minister of Propaganda. This is his first desk job since 2002. His responsibilities include, writing our newsletter, managing our Facebook/Twitter feed, creating content for Smuttynose TV and Portsmouth Brewery TV, among other communicative tasks. JT has many interests but none greater than UNC basketball. He also is an avid music listener, novice home repairer, infrequent cook of Southern cuisine, and sometimes visitor to art museums. JT has been volunteering for NERAX (New England Real Ale Exposition) since 2007. When he's not having a beer, you can find JT with tea or bourbon; independently of each other of course. He also loves a good dirty joke.

JT Thompson, who serves as Smuttynose Brewery Co.'s minister of propaganda, said he just learned recently that the Finestkind IPA made the cut for Fenway Park's new craft beer pavilion.
"It's a good thing because Fenway Park is probably the most high-profile beer account in Boston," said Thompson. "It's a really nice showcase for our beer." Thompson said Smuttynose Brewing Co. owner Peter Egleston and many members of the staff are huge Red Sox fans and are thrilled that their craft beer will now be enjoyed by millions of Boston baseball fans. "In the grand scheme of things, ballparks are catching on" as far as craft beer is concerned, Thompson said.
