Southeastern Pa. Correspondent NEW HOLLAND, Pa. - Dr. Ron Plain, professor and economist from the University of Missouri, spoke to pork producers and industry representatives at this week's Pennsylvania Pork Producers' 2010 Keystone Pork Expo held at Yoder's Country Market. After saying how he grew up on a crop and livestock farm in southwestern Missouri and sharing a few jokes expressing the frustrated state of pork producers in this country, Plain made a few sobering statements, "Things are really tough right now. The typical hog farm lost money in 24 of the last 26 months and the industry as a whole lost over $6 billion ... "Feed costs are up, mostly because of this country's new energy policy," he continued.
