Gladwell was born in 1963 to a proud Graham (an English civil engineer working as a professor at the University of Waterloo) and Joyce Gladwell (a Jamaican psychotherapist and author).

He interned with the National Journalism Center in Washington, D.C. in the spring of 1982. rom 1987 to 1996, he was a reporter with the Washington Post, where he covered business, science, and then served as the newspaper's New York City bureau chief. At the New Yorker, Mr. Gladwell has written on a wide range of topics, including the science of cool hunting, race and sports, physical genius, the concept of moral hazard and health care, and the difference between puzzles and mysteries.
