His father, Graham M. Gladwell, is professor emeritus of civil engineering at the University of Waterloo while his mother, Joyce E. Gladwell (née Nation), is a psychotherapist and published author.

Mr. Gladwell has said that his mother is his role model as a writer.
He interned with the National Journalism Center in Washington, D.C. in the spring of 1982. rom 1987 to 1996, he was a reporter with the Washington Post, where he covered business, science, and then served as the newspaper's New York City bureau chief. At the New Yorker, Mr. Gladwell has written on a wide range of topics, including the science of cool hunting, race and sports, physical genius, the concept of moral hazard and health care, and the difference between puzzles and mysteries.
