As a coaches' coach he worked both for the FIHA and on the University level.Lukkarila started coaching seniors in 1985 (Kuusamo, div. II).Two years later, he was called to work for the Finnish Ice Hockey association. and coached Finnish National Teams in three different National Team programmes.In 1992-1994, he assisted Matti Alatalo in coaching the U16 and U17 national team. As a National Team head coach (in 1995-1999), Lukkarila worked for the U15, U16, U17 and U18 Team.In April 1999, he won gold at the U18 World Championships in Germany. In 2000, he was called to coach the Women's National Team heading in the Salt Lake City Olympics.They accomplished the fourth place both the World Championships in 2001 and in the Salt Lake City Olympics 2002. Lukkarila started his full-time professional coaching in 2001 and coached senior professional teams from 2001-2003 and from 2005-2006.Jouko was responsible for the season planning, physical conditioning and game learning processes.In Feb. 2005, he signed a two-year contract as a coach for Jokerit, now assisting Waltteri Immonen.
