1004: Dealer of The Month Just One Touch/Video & Audio Center -, 1 Oct 2004 [cached]
One night, Joseph Akhtarzad, president and co-founder of Just One Touch, received a frantic phone call."If you don't get me a plasma TV tonight, I'm going to get a divorce," the woman said.Joseph thought she was kidding."I'm very serious," she said. She went on to explain that she and her husband had been fighting for six months over where and how to mount the TV.She was done fighting. She just wanted the TV.It was 7 p.m.Joseph helped her choose a TV over the phone and had it delivered and installed the next morning. She and her husband are still happily married.
Not every video and audio store will have the opportunity to save marriages, but some customers do take their systems that seriously; hence, so does Just One Touch.Whether it's a $4,000 home theater system or a $500,000 total home integration project, Just One Touch does whatever it takes to make the purchase and installation a unique and smooth experience.
It was 23 years ago when Joseph founded the Video & Audio Center retail store with his brother, Mayer.
"Our retail location drives business into the custom, especially high-end custom," says Joseph.
In fact, according to Joseph, there is a greater percentage of female clients than male.
"Women feel more comfortable in here than they do in larger retail stores," says Joseph.
Luckily, plasmas have a tendency to drive the sale of a full home theater system or at least a sound system, according to Joseph. He says that about 70-80 percent of people coming in for plasmas also end up purchasing a sound system, because it gives them more control.
"We want to make sure our employees are well educated and can learn and grow with the company," says Joseph.Joseph, for example, has a master's degree in electronics and electrical engineering. He went to school in London and came to the United States with his masters in electronics. He started his business by renting movies and computer games.Over time, people approached him asking for other retail products, such as answering machines, VCRs and TVs.One year, he went to the International Consumer Electronics Show and realized he could have any electronics in his store he wanted to sell."I followed it to the extreme to make sure I was on the cutting edge of my business," says Joseph.
"We never know what we're going to sell until we get there," says Joseph.
The manufacturers enjoy coming to the showroom to offer demonstrations, according to Joseph.
"The ideas, examples and tools available to us as a member of the CEDIA family have been some of the biggest resources in allowing us to develop and grow," says Joseph.
Joseph says another important association has been the Home Theater Specialists of America (HTSA).
And if it hadn't been for Joseph attending the CES show more than 20 years ago, there may not have been a Just One Touch.Staying in touch with the electronics industry helps the company maintain its well-trained staff and have information about new products before clients.Just One Touch is in a unique position in a growing industry, and it wants to stay that way.
"It's unique to have a retail location that supplies products when needed," says Joseph.
"Every time a customer comes to our showroom, they ask to see a job we've done," says Joseph . "We work with a lot of high-end homeowners who don't want people walking through their house.
