Pocatello – Dr. Josepth Steiner has been named dean of the Idaho State University College of Pharmacy , replacing Dr. Barbara Wells , who accepted a deanship with the University of Mississippi in May.
I have been interested and have followed the ISU College of Pharmacy's success , quality of graduates and research for quite a while , said Steiner , who will arrive at ISU on Aug. 13.When I told people that I was interested in a position at the ISU College of Pharmacy , I was told what a great college it is and how proud the members of the community are of the program..
Steiner comes to Pocatello from Laramie , Wyo. , where he has been a professor and director of pharmacy practice at the University of Wyoming for four years.Prior to that he spent 18 years as clinical pharmacy director for the University of Wyoming College of Health Sciences School of Human Medicine and Pharmacy in the Casper , Wyo. , Family Practice residency program.
Steiner has been a member of the executive committee for the Wyoming Area Health Education Center , co-director of the Wyoming AIDS Education and Training Center , and has served on several state health care advisory boards. He is an active presenter and publisher and has been an author of successful grants for more than two decades.
The ISU College of Pharmacy is not new to Steiner. He has precepted a student in the nontraditional doctor of pharmacy program and has been an external reviewer for ISU faculty in the tenure and promotion process.
Steiner said many things attracted him to ISU.
Most important , was the strong support that the College of Pharmacy and the health professions educational programs have from the administration of the university , he said.Years ago , I was interested in a faculty position with the college , but I was unable to pursue the position..
A Michigan native , Steiner received B.S. degrees in zoology and pharmacy and a Pharm.D. at the University of Michigan , and served a residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center.
Accompanying Steiner to Pocatello will be his wife , Susan , who has a Ph.D. in education and is board certified as a nurse practitioner in family practice and in women's health. She taught and maintained a clinical practice for the University of Wyoming School of Nursing for the past 13 years and looks forward to joining the ISU nursing faculty.

Even so, the study provides valuable information for college administrators, said Joseph Steiner, dean of the University of Wyoming's College of Health Sciences. While the university wouldn't start a new program based solely on the report, it will help officials plan for the future.
"It lets us have a picture of what the state's needs are and what we can do to address those needs," he said.
The university is currently discussing whether to develop a program for the technicians who perform laboratory tests. The study predicts the state may need to fill more than 500 such jobs this decade.
"If you look at the workforce report, it shows it is a need that is not being met," Steiner said.
