Omaha, NE: Pastor Joseph L. Shannon, Sr., the Pastor of Greater St. Paul Ministries, Inc. of Omaha, is now serving as Bishop over the Eastern Nebraska Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Churches of God In Christ.
The consecration took place at the 105th Annual Church of God In Christ (COGIC) Holy Convocation.
Bishop Shannon's new appointment will give him oversight of 11 Churches in Omaha, NE, Lincoln, NE, and Sioux City and Des Moines, IA.
Bishop Shannon will continue to Pastor the two Omaha churches he oversees, Greater St. Paul COGIC, 2123 Miami St., and Greater St. Paul Worship Center, 99th and Fort St. in Omaha, NE.
To this union, two children were born; Annette Shannon- Falkner and Joseph L. Shannon, Jr.
Missionary Shannon heard and accepted the call of the Lord to the ministry.In 1990, she became a licensed Evangelist Missionary under the leadership of Supervisor Louise Secret.When Pastor Shannon was appointed to GSP on August 4, 1985, Missionary Shannon became the First Lady of the Greater St. Paul Ministries Church of God in Christ.She has been the First Lady of the Eastern District for the past 15 years. (if possible combine the next paragraph with this one)Missionary Shannon is the president of the Greater St. Paul Women's Department and is a faithful third generation Church of God in Christ member.She has held many positions on the local, district, and state levels.She has served as the Nebraska Jurisdictional State Minister of Music, the State Women's Department Financial Secretary, Vice President of the Pastors' and Ministers' Wives Circle and has recently been elevated to the position of President of this ministry.Missionary Shannon has also served as Director of the GSP Children's Church.Over the past seven years, she has successfully presided over the life changing and empowering Woman to Woman's Conference at Greater St. Paul.She serves as the Minister of Music and teaches the weekly Newcomers Class. Missionary Shannon is employed as a Family Room Liaison with the Omaha Public Schools.In this position she mentors many children and assists their families.She has been instrumental in implementing intra-school tutoring with junior and senior high students and established a parental forum for families to share their concerns.Through Missionary Shannon, Greater St. Paul Ministries became recognized as an Omaha Public Schools Tutorial Site.The Omaha Public School system bestowed on her the Volunteer of the Year award for her work with Greater St. Paul's After School Academy.Along with her many responsibilities and accomplishments, she is most proud to be a saved and Holy Ghost filled woman of God.

Pastor Shannon entered into a professional football career in the World Football League in 1974 as a member of the New York Stars.His football career was short-lived because God had another plan for his life.After moving to Omaha, Nebraska, Pastor Shannon was employed by Scott Paper Company for five years.During that tenure, he served as the Area Manager.Pastor Shannon accepted a better opportunity with Johnson and Johnson Company as a Medical/Surgical Sales Representative.He was promoted to the position of Executive Representative and was employed with Johnson and Johnson for 16 years.Upon accepting the call of the Lord to work in the ministry full time, Pastor Shannon retired from his secular task to do a work for the Lord.Pastor Shannon accepted the Lord as a young man and learned as a young saint to be very serious about his salvation.His fervent prayer life has been the foundation that he now shares with the people of the Lord under his leadership.Pastor Shannon served as President of the Nebraska COGIC State Choir from 1976 to 1979.He served as State Sunday School Superintendent and Chairman of the United States Auxiliary Conventions (USAC) until he was appointed District Superintendent of the Eastern District, which he now still faithfully serves.Pastor Shannon was an associate minister under Elder Frank T. Likely and an associate Elder to the late Elder John Bell of Mt. Zion COGIC.He served as a member of the Ordination Board and Finance Board.Pastor Shannon has avid community involvement and foresees becoming more involved.
Pastor Shannon came in with a mission and a vision.Yet, in his humble beginnings, he started with no finances and five members.He preached and taught as if the house was full.What was presented then and what we have now is truly the handiwork of God through Pastor Shannon.A first renovation project was paid off in about two years and ten months.The current renovated edifice, by the help of God, was paid in full in December 2005, taking approximately six years. Superintendent Shannon has always had a true concern for the people of God.The Lord revealed to him that Greater St. Paul COGIC would be a "Cathedral of Praise."The motto that God gave Pastor Shannon is "The Church in the Heart of the City with the People of the City in Its Heart."
Joseph L. Shannon, Sr. was born June 9, 1950, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, where he was raised in his early youth.He moved to Harlem, Brooklyn and Southampton Long Island, New York, graduating from Southampton High School in 1969.On August 14, 1971, Joseph L. Shannon, Sr. was united in holy matrimony to Helene A. Williams of Independence, Kansas.
