Far from even the most liberal definition of racism, according to Fr. Joe Marchese, the Director of FYE, "This office needs the most qualified person for the job, including an ability to engage all students inclusively."Marchese further added that "We [FYE] are very committed to a diverse working force here at BC and in this Office because we are committed to the well-being of all students," adding that he encourages everyone to work with FYE and utilize their services.

Beyond Marchese's statements, an examination of FYE programs including Freshman Orientation seeks to undermine the protesters claims.According to Fr. Marchese, throughout the 3 days admitted students spend on campus prior to the start of their first year, more than half of the entire program is dedicated to issues relating in some way to topics of diversity.

Marchese emphasized that the decision to add her to the lineup came directly out of a meeting with students.
He also said that the office has worked with a student of AHANA descent to revamp a skit regarding racial tolerance on campus.

Marchese said that the protest's focus on filling the position of assistant director with someone of AHANA descent is misguided.Because FYE is one of the University's smallest departments, with only three permanent staff members, it becomes critical that each staff member hired is the most capable candidate possible, he said.
This same mentality of hiring the most qualified candidates possible also applies to the hiring of Orientation Leaders."It's a very rigorous screening process," he said."We are always encouraging AHANA students to apply."
Although he has qualms with the handling of the student protest, he emphasized that he was still very open to hearing feedback."The intention is always to use the feedback of students to refine our Orientation program so that it is the best, if not among the best in the country," said Marchese.
