Rabbi Joseph Gewirtz received his B.A. in Psychology from the Queens College of the City University of New York in 1975, and Rabbinic ordination (Smicha) from The Rabbinical Seminary of America (Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim) in 1981 where he was a fellow at Kollel Ner David and a graduate assistant in Talmud.His
teacher training was at Torah Umesora's Joseph Shapiro Teacher Training Institute
.During these years, Rabbi Gewirtz
was involved in Jewish youth groups such as NCSY
After two years as an instructor at the Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study in Milwaukee, Rabbi Gewirtz
began teaching at RDLSYA in 1985.He
began the after-school Torah Clubs and the Parent Education Program and has administered the Gam-Chai
Community Service Program since its inception.In 1991, Rabbi Gewirtz
was named one of the finalists for the Crown Family Foundation's Covenant Award for Exceptional
Jewish Educators.Rabbi Gewirtz also teaches at the Harrisburg Hebrew High School and his own judaic studies classes for high school students.During the summer he directs the Tutoring and Enrichment Program at Camp Shoresh in Adamstown, Maryland.
wife Varda are the parents of six RDLSYA graduates and their two youngest children are in Ganeinu and 7th grade.
