Dr. Gettys, a native of York County, is an active 94-year-old retired Presbyterian pastor who currently serves as a volunteer Assistant Chaplain at Presbyterian Home in Clinton, SC and as Interim Pastor of Shady Grove Presbyterian Church.He also served as organizing Pastor of Westminister Presbyterian Church in Greenwood.
"Please Understand Me" is based on Dr. Gettys' daily experiences of his effort to be a caregiver to his wife who has Alzheimer's disease.He is presently working on a book of the same experiences titled "Why Can't I Remember".His previous works include "What Presbyterians Believe," which has sold more than 180,000 copies.

CLINTON -- Tirzah native Dr. Joseph M. Gettys was awarded the Order of the Palmetto on Wednesday by Gov.

Gettys, 97, attended York High School and was a professor at Presbyterian College and pastor to many churches.His book "Caregivers Can Survive," chronicled Gettys' living with his late wife's Alzheimer's disease.
The Order of the Palmetto is South Carolina's highest civilian honor.
Gettys' only surviving sibling of 11 brothers and sisters, Elizabeth Parsons of Rock Hill, attended the ceremony Wednesday in Clinton at the Presbyterian Home where Gettys lives.
