Dr Joseph Azzopardi graduated from the University of Malta in 1993. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists of the UK, the Pain Faculty of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthesia and the Pain Faculty of the Royal College of Anaesthetists of the UK.
He commenced training in anaesthesia and pain medicine in Dublin and subsequently undertook higher specialist training in London at The Barts and The London School of Anaesthesia and other associated hospitals. He was a visiting fellow in Regional Anaesthesia in Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden and in 2002 undertook a two year fellowship in Pain Medicine in Sydney and Adelaide. He was appointed to his current post at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospitals on his return to the UK.
Since taking up his post he has been actively involved with the development of dedicated cancer pain services at Guy's and St.Thomas' Foundation Trust. His major interests include interventional pain management, radiofrequency ablation techniques, neuromodulation, spinal cord stimulation, neuroaxial drug delivery and pain management in cancer survivors.

Dr Azzopardi is a Consultant in Pain Medicine & Anaesthesia at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital. Graduating from the University of Malta in 1993, he received anaesthetic and pain training in Dublin and London. In 2000, he was a visiting fellow in Regional Anaesthesia in Uppsala, Sweden. Subsequently in 2002 to 2004, he acquired advanced specialist training in Pain Medicine in Sydney and Adelaide where he developed his interests in interventional pain management, neuromodulation and cancer pain. Dr Azzopardi is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists UK.
He was awarded the Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2004. He is a Foundation Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. Dr Azzopardi treats patients with degenerative spine disease, back and neck pain, arm pain and sciatica. He dedicates a significant part of his clinical time managing Cancer Pain and has been actively involved with the development of Multidisciplinary Integrated Cancer Pain Services at Guys and St.Thomas' Foundation Trust. He also contributes to the Acute Pain Service in Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital. His Pain Medicine interests include Interventional Pain Management, Advanced Radiofrequency Ablation Pain Therapies and Neuromodulation (Spinal Cord Stimulation & Neuro-axial Drug Delivery). Dr Azzopardi also provides Medico-Legal specialist reports and accepts instructions for defendant and claimant personal injury. Dr Azzopardi has a keen interest in Medical Education and sits on the London Deanery Pain Training Advisory Group Committee.
