Dr Jose M Prieto-Garcia is Lecturer in Pharmacognosy of the Centre for Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy as from 2006. His teaching duties include under and postgraduate lectures on analytical chemistry (‘Chromatography'), ‘Management of Herbal Products and Food supplements in Community Pharmacy', ‘Medicinal Cannabis' and ‘Drug Discovery at the Nutrition-Pharmacology interface'.
Dr. Prieto-Garcia's research started at elucidating the effect of anti-inflammatory medicinal plants and natural products on enzymes of the arachidonate pathway using targeted lipidomics. This state-of-the-art research was developed during his PhD (2001, Universitat de Valencia, Spain) alternating with visits to world-class centres such as the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (University of Tubingen, Tubingen, Germany) and the William Harvey Institute (Queen Mary University, London, UK). After his PhD, he was immediately appointed as Young Researcher of the EU funded project 'Insect Chemical Ecology' (INCHECO) to explore the biochemical interactions between plants and insects (2001-2004, Department of Bioorganic Chemistry, Universita degli Studi di Pisa, Italy) gaining a wide experience in phytochemical analysis. He afterwards joined the Centre for Pharmacognosy and Phtotherapy in April 2005 as a Postdoctoral Researcher on a European Union funded consortium developing standardised extracts of Cannabis for use in the treatment of migraine and rheumatoid arthritis.
His current research lines focus on lipidomics of cancer cells, preclinical development of antiallergic food supplements and applying artificial intelligence to drug discovery, development of new NMR-based metabolomic strategies and the prediction of the bioactivities of complex natural products using Artificial Intelligence.

Dr. Prieto-Garcia's research started at elucidating the potential anti-inflammatory effect of medicinal plants and natural products by targeting enzymes of the arachidonate pathway using targeted lipidomics. This state-of-the-art research was developed during his PhD (2001, Universitat de Valencia, Spain) alternating with visits to world-class centres such as the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (University of Tubingen, Tubingen, Germany) and the William Harvey Institute (Queen Mary University, London, UK).After his PhD, he was immediately appointed as Research Fellow to explore the biochemical interactions between plants and insects as Young Researcher of the EU funded project Insect Chemical Ecology (INCHECO) (2001-2004, Department of Bioorganic Chemistry, Universita degli Studi di Pisa, Italy) gaining a wide experience in phytochemical analysis.
The study of antioxidant properties of medicinal plants and foods has been also of his special interest, particularly peroxinitrite-induced processes and essential oils.
