I GOT HOLD of a letter written by old friend Joe Perez, an editors’ editor I’d dare say, asking those who were responsible for the sprucing up of the Barlin Monument to correct the engraved statements they made on its circular base. Some months back, mid last year, we had a good laugh over the seeming confusion of “on†and “in†(among other grammatical errors) by whoever wrote those things about Monsignor Barlin, comic errors yet already etched in marble around the four corners of the monument of the First Filipino Bishop. The letter was sent on (not in) October 4 last year and a copy furnished to Mayor John Bongat.
But some four months had already lapsed, and Joe told me nothing has yet been heard from those who restored the monument - with the Mayor refusing to let the buck stop at his table and instead passing it to those who caused the errata. Not even a short reply of thanking Joe for bothering to edit their work which ordinarily Joe would have thrown to the waste basket if submitted to him for publication in the Bicol Mail. I also met November last year a good friend who is a member of that group and told her to hurry up the corrections since all Nagueños, and not only the guilty ones, are being identified with bad English. So more than four months of no action from that group, I believe it’s time to expose the letter. So with Joe’s permission, which he reluctantly gave, here it is:
