Rev. Jon Villers

Baptist Temple, Charleston, West Virginia
We have been on a journey here at Baptist Temple through the month of May.
Someone else mentioned Jesus and the Transfiguration, with Peter, James and John and the voices from the past of Elijah and Moses who showed up and got to be there to represent all of those that had come before Jesus, and they recognized Jesus as the Son of God.
And then, before I knew what I was doing, I found myself on the ground as the same Voice, or was it the Man's voice said to me, "Jonathan, You are My beloved son, with you I am well pleased!"And then my heart burst open to receive His love.
John the Baptist said that too, and then he said that you should turn away from what you have been doing and follow the One that's leading us into the Kingdom.Jesus shared these words as He walked into the Synagogue and He opened up Isaiah, and we heard Brother Archie (Snedegar) read them this morning, that it's now time to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives, to recover sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, that is the Kingdom that Jesus is inviting us to come and be a part of.
And so Peter gets a new name, James and John get a new name, and you don't get nicknames of being the "Sons of Thunder" unless there's some anger in your background. And here were James and John, they had to deal with issues in their own lives. And Jesus said, "I am here so that we can deal with all of this stuff in your life together because I have created you for a far greater purpose than what you show up and do on spontaneous kinds of issues that may cause trouble.Anger can kill. And James and John, you remember later on in the story where they said you know, these folks don't believe in you, let's just call fire down from heaven.Do you remember that part when James and John thought that would be a good answer?

"Our town has dealt with a few challenges over the last year, especially with the closing of Century Aluminum in February," said Pastor Jonathon Villers of First Baptist Church.

"Many of our church members have joined the crew of helpers, but we get calls from other people who have heard about what we're doing, and they want to know how they can help," said Villers. "By giving just an hour of their time a week, they really are contributing to something worthwhile."
Villers said more people come during the end of the month, when money is tight.
"The CommUnity Kitchen is really a team effort," said Villers.
Parchment Valley Conference Center has donated food for the cause.
"As long as there is a need for this service, we will continue it," said Villers.
