QUT civil engineering lecturer and researcher Associate Professor Jon Bunker said a possible new toll on the Gateway Motorway between Nudgee and Deagon as foreshadowed by the state government would set a precedent in Queensland at least.
The federal government's promise to split the cost of funding the upgrade with the state government is on the provision that the State drop threats of a new motorway toll. "The motorway at this point on Brisbane's northside is an existing road, there is no free alternative and any moves to put a toll on the motorway would drive traffic to Sandgate Road, the nearest arterial road, and cause excessive congestion," Professor Bunker said. "An upgrade of the Gateway Motorway would improve safety and reduce delays as would upgrades to the Bruce and Warrego Highways." Professor Bunker said a Cross River Rail was important because the Brisbane rail system was near its capacity at CBD rail entry points, and in the longer term the rail would ensure improved CBD access and therefore economic development. "Planning, engineering and delivery of these projects would provide much needed economic stimulus to the relevant sectors of the Queensland economy," Professor Bunker said.
