News from around the Province - Provincial Grand Lodge of West Lancashire
Provincial Grand Master Peter Hosker is looking to Jon Clipsham "for fresh and young ideas in respect of our planning and development"........
Provincial Grand Master Peter Hosker is looking to Jon Clipsham "for fresh and young ideas in respect of our planning and development". Jon was invested as an Assistant Provincial Grand Master at the meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge in Blackpool. Jon takes over responsibility for the Eccles and South Eastern Groups from Geoffrey Bloch. Provincial Grand Master Peter Hosker said: "Jon Clipsham will make a good Assistant Provincial Grand Master. I am determined to appoint men to my Provincial Craft Cabinet who will bring to it a balance of skills, experience and ages and will reflect the make-up of our Province. Jon is relatively young (though not much younger than the new Provincial Grand Master of Cheshire) and he has many skills, and I believe that he will bring an even better balance to my Cabinet. I will be looking to him for fresh and young ideas in respect of our planning and development. Also, I am asking him to take over responsibility for the South Eastern Group and the Eccles and District Group, and I am sure that he will work hard for the benefit of both Groups." Jon said: "I was totally surprised, shocked but delighted when I was invited to become an Assistant Provincial Grand Master. It is a great honour and I look forward to serving our great Province." Initiated into Barlow Moor Lodge No 4525 in May 1995, Jon served as Worshipful Master in 2001. He served the Lodge as secretary for a year. His talents were first recognised by the Province in 2004 when he became a Provincial Grand Steward and joined Quingenti Lodge No 8516. In 2007 Jon was invested as a Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies. Jon joined Architect Chapter No 1375 in 1998 and was installed as First Principal in 2004. He was appointed as a Provincial Grand Steward in 2007 and joined the Provincial Grand Stewards' Chapter No 8516. Brought up on the Fylde coast, Jon was educated at King Edward V11 School, Lytham. He went on to study at Imperial College, London where he obtained a BSc (Eng) in Metallurgy and Materials Science. He then obtained a Master of Science Degree in Managing Catalytic Technology from the University of Liverpool. Jon, who is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, also has qualifications in marketing, Theology and teaching. Aged 44, Jon has been married to Sally for 18 years and they have two children, Robert aged 16 and 14-year-old Laura. With a partner, Jon runs a consulting company operating in the chemicals industry. The company has recently won an Exporters Award. Prior to setting up this company Jon worked for major chemical and precious metals companies in commercial and technical roles. His work has taken him to many parts of the world. JON'S SPECIAL REGALIA The apron worn by Jon Clipsham will be different from that seen as part of the regalia of other Assistant Provincial Grand Masters in the Province. As Jon is not a Grand Officer he will wear the official apron of an Assistant Provincial Grand Master. When Jon receives Grand Rank he would then wear the apron of that rank with his Assistant Provincial Grand Master's Chain of Office. South Eastern Group News - Provincial Grand Lodge of West Lancashire
After the meeting Jon spoke with Flixton Lodge's newest Fellow Craft, who is a watch manager with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.
During the discussion it transpired that Jon was taking his scout troop on camp to Bispham Hall (near Billinge) the following weekend, and was running a camp themed on Prometheus - the titan who stole fire from the gods in Greek mythology. With a weekend of activities planned around fire, some advice on fire safety would certainly be a very welcome addition, and so Jon asked whether Ian would be willing to help out. Jon Clipsham (Assistant Provincial Grand Master) was in attendance and for part of the evening's formalities, occupied the chair of King Solomon. Upon taking the chair Jon said to the brethren that he believed that this evening, rather than being a sad event, was one worthy of celebration - a celebration of good men, good masons, and a good Lodge. Jon then went on to present a brief history of the Lodge - On the 14th July 1885, a petition was sent to the Grand Secretary in London, requesting permission to found a new Lodge, to be named the Prince Edward Lodge, in honour of Prince Albert Victor Christian Edward, the eldest son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, who on his accession to the throne became King Edward VII. Jon said that he understood that due to declining membership, lack of candidates and the age profile of its members, the Lodge, after exploring every avenue, had taken the decision to surrender their warrant and centenary warrant. He said he hoped that most of the Prince Edward Brethren would continue their Freemasonry by joining another Lodge meeting at Heaton Moor. In his closing remarks Jon said that just over a week ago, he had been invested as an Assistant Provincial Grand Master - with that office comes a requirement to act on behalf of the Provincial Grand Master in his absence. Jon then asked the lodge Secretary to record in the final minutes of the lodge, the gratitude of the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master to all the members of Prince Edward Lodge No. 2109, present and past, for the huge contribution they have made to our order. The visit was to honour a Member of Barlow Moor Lodge; Jon Clipsham (Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies), who will be invested at the next meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge as an Assistant Provincial Grand Master with responsibility for the South Eastern and Eccles Group.
50th and 60th Celebrations - Provincial Grand Lodge of West Lancashire
The occasion was marked by the attendance of Jon Clipsham, Eccles Group Chairman Stuart Shea, Paul Hesketh (Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies) together with David Johnson (PrAGDC) and Barry Hanson (PrGStwd) who have been almost ever presents at Installations and other celebrations throughout their year in office.
Jon mentioned that another retired District Judge, whose name is familiar to all of us, had also just celebrated his 50th anniversary and that is our Deputy Provincial Grand Master - Very Worshipful Brother Brian Gillbanks. Jon went on to say to Fred that "there is, however, a very important part of your life which we have not yet touched on this evening, which is, of course, the reason for our celebration this evening, and that is your passion for Freemasonry". In closing Jon said: "Brother Fred, in your family life, your friendships, your service to the country, your career, and your Freemasonry, you have proved to be man of great humility and dedication; quiet and unassuming, yet incredibly capable. I mentioned earlier that you share your birthday with that incredible man, Nelson Mandela. One of his sayings was: 'A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.' You have without doubt been richly blessed with both a good head and a good heart, and I'm sure every one of us here this evening would agree, that you are a formidable man. We congratulate you." At the social board Fred thanked Jon for his kind words along with everyone present for supporting him. The meeting was attended by 140 brethren including eight Assistant Provincial Grand Masters - Eddie Caulfield, John Moore, Leon Tax, Michael Hill, Terry Hudson, Stanley Oldfield, Howard Jones and Jon Clipsham - Past Provincial Grand Master Colin Penty Wright, Past Deputy Provincial Grand Master Tom Blackburn, several former Assistant Provincial Grand Masters and Grand Officers from all parts of the Province.
