Jon DoneyWhat is a gougeres?This is a classical pastry made with French cream puff dough combined with fresh pepper and Swiss cheese.Gougeres are often served at wine tasting events in France.It is one of many items that Jon Doney is learning to make under the direction of Steve Gadbois, Executive Chef, of Sacks Caf,.Jon is a Dimond High School senior who says he's always enjoyed baking.He has learned to love cooking while attending the Culinary Arts Program at the King Career Center (KCC).When not busy turning out gougere at Sack's Caf,, Jon works at the Marriot Hotel as part of the On-the-Job Training Program with the KCC Culinary Arts Department.By working two jobs, Jon is hoping to broaden his culinary skills because his goal is to one day become a chef at a top restaurant.Jack Nurmi, KCC Culinary Arts instructor, says, "I believe Jon will have restaurants competing for his talent!"Jon has served at Beans Caf,, helped at Trick or Treat Town, and gave gifts for the Alaska Railroad at the Christmas and Easter Trains.He also enjoys playing the piano, bowling, and is active in his church youth group.Steve Gadbois, describes Jon as, "…a pleasure and joy to work with not only because he is a quick learner, but he is also focused and a hard worker.Jon is like a little brother to everybody here; we enjoy teaching him new things."Jon's future plans include obtaining a Culinary Arts degree, interning in Europe or perhaps on the Carnival Cruise line and opening his own restaurant in Anchorage.Look for Jon's new gourmet eatery in about ten to fifteen years.
