Jon Bonanno

Co-Founder/Advisor
Jon brings 20 years of experience in start-up companies and cleantech to his role of Advisor. Jon served an important role in Cool Earth Solar in the early stages of the company as a Co-Founder and also it's first investor.
He is currently the Chief Commercial Officer of Empower Micro, where he is responsible for customer acquisition, finance, and investor relations. Prior to that he began Sustainable Power Assets (SPA) in 2010 to focus on sourcing, advising, building, owning, selling and operating renewable energy assets. Primarily focused on solar, SPA works with development partners in the US and Europe to bring smart capital to bear on the deployment of qualified projects. Prior to SPA, he co-founded Principle Power for the purpose of commercializing WindFloat, a semi-submersible floating foundation for utility-scale offshore wind. He is currently serving as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Principle Power. In 2006, he sold his position in ViaMoviles to the original partnership in order to dedicate 100% of his time to Cleantech participation, consulting and investing.
He was elected by his peers to Chair the Cleantech Investment Committee for the Keiretsu Forum Angel Network, the world's largest angel investing organization. Jon is a member of ACORE (American Counsel on Renewable Energy) and the New Energy Congress, a committee member of Imagine H2O, and advisor to Azure Power, investor in Principle Power and Earth Class Mail, founding member of Coalition for Green Bank, founding member of the Clean Economy Network, and a sponsor of EasyConnect, a Berkeley-based mobility and transportation study group. Less than two weeks after Empower's move-in date, InnoSpring helped the young company-which develops technology that converts electricity between AC and DC-set up meetings with 22 China-based venture capital firms in preparation for a trip to Shanghai in May. When Jon Bonanno, chief commercial officer of the clean-tech startup Empower Micro Systems, got up to face a small, packed room in Santa Clara, California, last week, it wasn't like the polished "demo days" run by the highest-profile Silicon Valley startup accelerators. There was no stage, not even a screen for the projector. The sound system buzzed with painful feedback. The 100 or so guests stood or sat in folding chairs under bright fluorescent lights in a space adjoining a large startup workplace that contained a distinct no-no of Silicon Valley office culture: cubicles.

"This is demo day, Chinese style," Bonanno had joked earlier.
The presentations marked the first anniversary of InnoSpring, an incubator backed mainly by Chinese investors that bills itself as the first to focus on opportunities for startups in both the United States and China. Whatever the scene lacked in frills, it more than made up for in the real opportunities provided to the companies presenting. What was notable for Bonanno, a Silicon Valley veteran, was that some of the top clean-tech investing firms with offices in both the U.S. and China were in the room.

Bonanno says the designs could lower the cost of installing and producing solar power and provide a powerful new competitive opportunity to solar manufacturers by allowing them to mount the boxes right on their panels (today most inverters are bulky, separate appliances). The glitch is that most manufacturers are in China, where doing business is not straightforward to U.S. companies, says Bonanno.
Advisors at InnoSpring made introductions and helped Empower navigate visits to China, and the company has already signed a customer deal with one of the world's top three solar-panel manufacturers, Bonanno says. Last week, it was seeking $5.5 million in new investment.
