In today's ceremonies Ray Kelvin, the entrepreneur who set up the Ted Baker retail empire, and Professor John Willis, former head of the then School of Mathematics at the University of Bath, received honorary degrees.
An internationally-renowned mathematician, Professor Willis is known both for his accomplished research and his significant contribution to teaching.
A Fellow of the Royal Society
work in applied mathematics has significantly advanced our understanding of solid mechanics and, in particular, of the behaviour of composite materials.
He is also the originator of the John Willis award, an internal prize for excellence in teaching.
In addition, Professor Willis did much during his time at Bath to encourage sport, as well as the highest standards in mathematics.
He received a Doctor of Science degree.
