That's likely to cause a major shift in health care delivery, said John Stump, a chiropractor and doctor of sports medicine at the Integrative Medicine Center in Alabama.
He pointed out that in 2012, Medicare beneficiaries became eligible for wellness visits to their doctors, a situation that puts Boomers in the forefront once again for social change. "A wellness visit requires a totally different approach," Stump noted. "It is designed to promote health, wellness and understanding of lifestyle choices that will affect different conditions, like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and numerous others." However, many medical doctors are trained to treat sickness and serious illness, and few hospitals are geared toward wellness, Stump added. One potential, and seismic, change in the current health care model could be increased focus on issues such as nutrition, supplements, sleep and exercise. "Each person should be evaluated from a lifestyle perspective," he said.
