A Divine Choice: John Starnes moves from rock and roll band to God's band
John Starnes' life is a testimony to the fact that God uses ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things for His kingdom.
Many will remember Starnes from the 1980s when he sang at large Jimmy Swaggart crusades around the world.
"It was a very, very special time," Starnes told The Sun. "It was the period of my life which defined who I am today. I am forever grateful for that experience. Maybe one day I'll write a book about it and tell of the great meetings we had."
One of Starnes' most memorable experiences was singing in front of an audience in India, officially estimated at more than one million people, during a Benny Hinn crusade a few years ago
Starnes has appeared on numerous television programs with, among others, Dr. Charles Stanley, John Hagee, and on Bill Gaither's Homecoming Friends.
Over the last six years, Starnes has served on the Elder board of his home church, GracePointe, in Franklin, Tenn.
This former lead singer of Choice, a local Atlanta rock and roll band, came to know the Lord after years of searching. Life on the road, and the temptations that came with it, proved to be an empty substitute for the love that he so desperately craved - a love that only God could give.
"At the time, I didn't understand why I was unsettled in my heart, but I just felt like it was time to move on in my life, although I didn't have a clear direction as to where to go," Starnes said. "Not too long after, I gave my heart to the Lord. Now I believe it was God who was leading me to Him."
Starnes made the life-changing decision to leave the band and dedicated whatever gifts and talents he had to God and to full-time ministry. He then began his Christian music career in a big way - with a big song.
"The first song I ever sang after becoming a Christian was 'The Lord's Prayer,' " he said. "I sang it in a tiny country church the evening after I had given my heart to the Lord in 1977 while driving a tractor on a farm in Newnan, Ga."
Starnes moved back to Atlanta and attended Mt. Paran Church of God until he moved to Baton Rouge, La., in 1978 to work with Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. He continued to work there for more than 13 years as a singer and one of Swaggart's pilots.
Although Starnes has been associated with Southern gospel music, he has always considered himself to be in the inspirational category.
"As with most gospel music, I endeavor to minister to the hearts and souls of the people listening," he said. "I like to think of it as turning someone's heart toward God with the music. The listener's attention should be on God, not the singer when the music is over."
"Jerusalem" and "Lighthouse" are two of Starnes' most requested songs, and his performance of "Beulah Land" is one of the most popular versions of the song. He also co-wrote "Singing With the Saints," the title song of a platinum selling Gaither video and CD, as well as dozens of other songs. To hear his music, visit his Web site,
"I tell people that songs are a lot like your children," Starnes said. "You can't say which one is the favorite because they are all special in some way. My mood, need, and place in life determine which song will touch me at that moment."
To this day, Starnes continues to live out the promise he made to God so long ago. Through his music and testimony, he continues to encourage the church and remind them of their worth in the kingdom of God.
"A person should walk out of the concert with a focus on God rather than on me," Starnes said.

John Starnes
John Starnes is a man who serves the King of kings and the Lord of lords . . . Jesus Christ.
His love and consecration for the Lord are heard in every word of his songs; are plainly visible on his face; and are evidenced in every aspect of his life.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 7, 1950, it seemed John was destined for a life far distant from the one he lives today. After graduating from high school in 1968, he attended the University of Georgia for a short time before enlisting in the Army in 1969.
Although he enlisted in the Army to fly helicopters, a non-aviation accident prevented his finishing flight school. After completing his two-year enlistment, he received an honorable discharge in 1971.
During the next few years, John spent most of his time working as a lead singer for a rock'n'roll band. (Singing was a talent he had only discovered a few years before as a senior in high school.) In between singing engagements John worked as a bookkeeper, waiter and bartender, trying to find his place in life.It was at this time, however, that flying began to play an important factor in his life.Step-by-step he acquired his licenses to fly private, commercial, instrument and finally, multiengine airplanes.
In the summer of 1977, frustrated with the prospect of singing Rock'n'roll for the rest of his life, John hit the streets looking for a full-time flying job; but every door he knocked on was shut in his face.No one, it seemed, was willing to hire a low-time pilot, especially one without a college education.By the end of the summer, John was unemployed. But through all of this, God was working out some important details for John Starnes' life.
A relative owned an 800-acre farm south of Atlanta.Hearing of John's unemployment, he offered John a job as a farmhand. It was during those months of hard work and solitude that an awareness of God's great handiwork caused John to dedicate his heart and life to Jesus Christ.A few days later, he attended a revival in a local country church and walked the aisle for salvation. He has never looked back and his life since that day has been a testimony to God's faithfulness.
John returned to Atlanta and got a job in a small warehouse. He joined Mount Paran Church of God and sang in the choir. It was there, while using his talent for God, that John met his future wife, Teresa.
In July of 1978, Jimmy Swaggart Ministries hired John as a back-up singer. The day after being hired, a position also opened for a pilot on the ministry's airplane.John was now doing two of the things he liked most; singing and flying. He served as a co-pilot for the next 10 years and was even able to obtain his jet rating, allowing him to fly the ministry airplane to crusades not only throughout the U.S. and Canada, but also all over the world.
For over thirteen years, John was a regular on the ministry telecast.Millions around the world were blessed each week, as the Holy Spirit would minister through the anointed singing.
In October of 1991, after many months of prayer, John began his solo ministry singing in churches throughout the U.S. and abroad.
"My heart is to minister to the Body of Christ as Paul says in Col. 3:16 ... teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.'"
John and Teresa currently live in Nashville, TN with their two beautiful daughters, Christia (19) and Jessica (18).
John Starnes is one man whose song is truly his life and whose life is a true reflection of his song.
