Smriga named state's attorney for Fairfield judicial district
BRIDGEPORT -- John C. Smriga has been named the new state's attorney for the Fairfield Judicial District, succeeding his former boss, Jonathan Benedict, who held the post for the last 12 years. "John Smriga is the consummate professional who has a long history as a prosecutor in this state," said Chief State's Attorney Kevin Kane. Smriga, 55, has been a state prosecutor for 28 years, and most recently, has been the Fairfield district's supervisory assistant state's attorney. His appointment becomes effective Friday, but he will be formally sworn in at a later date. "Being a Bridgeport native, it will be an honor and pleasure to serve the people of this judicial district," Smriga said.
