John Rudan has been reappointed as Head of Surgery at Queen's University, Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston General Hospital and Providence Care Centre for a second five-year term from July 1, 2014 until June 30, 2019.
After graduating from Queen's with a BSc in Life Sciences in 1976 and an MD in 1981, Dr. Rudan completed postgraduate training in orthopaedics at Queen's and as a McLaughlin Fellow at the University of Toronto. He was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery at Queen's in 1988, promoted to Associate Professor in 1994 and to Professor in 2004.
A pioneer in computed-assisted surgical techniques, Dr. Rudan was a leader in the creation of the Clinical Mechanics Group, now known as the Human Mobility Research Centre (HMRC), at Queen's. He was co-applicant on two Canadian Foundation for Innovation projects that established HMRC and the OR 2010. He has also led or co-investigated studies involving more than $9 million in funding from sources including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Dr. Rudan also holds 11 patents as a co-inventor and he has produced nearly 130 refereed papers for publication in national and international journals and conferences.
Dr. Rudan supervises students, residents and fellows in surgery as well as graduate students in engineering, computer science, rehabilitation therapy and physical and health education. He has served as the Vice-Chair of the Orthopaedics Oral Examination Committee for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and as Vice-President and President of the Clinical Teachers' Association at Queen's. He has lectured at more than 20 universities in Canada and the United States.

An orthopaedic surgeon at KGH, John Rudan also teaches orthopaedic surgery at Queen’s and is a principal researcher with Queen’s Human Mobility Research Centre (HMRC). John is recognized nationally as a leader in methods for total knee replacement and internationally for his contributions on numerous advisory panels for major orthopaedic implant manufacturers. A pioneer of computer-assisted surgical techniques, John performed the world’s first computer-assisted knee re-alignment at KGH in 1997. John will be leading computer-assisted surgical applications in repair and replacement of joints as well as in tumor biopsies for Operating Room 2010.

"The three-dimensional advantage of the CT scan is incorporated into the design to create a customized form that increases accuracy and efficiency in the OR," says Dr. John Rudan, orthopaedic surgeon at Kingston General Hospital and Professor of Surgery at Queen's University. Dr. Rudan is also Vice President of Clinical Relations at iGO Technologies Inc., the Kingston-based medical technology firm that assisted with the customized surgical planning software development. "The virtual representation in this form of computer-assist surgery allows for better reproducibility and a reduction in errors."
Dr. Rudan originally designed the drill template for a procedure known as hip resurfacing arthroplasty.
The guide was created at the Human Mobility Research Centre by Dr. Rudan and Dr. Manuela Kunz, the mechanical and software engineer behind this exciting and innovative tool.
