Presiding was Maj Gen Roddy Porter, Chairman of CSRR with John Owen President of the RFU as principal guest; after dinner in good naval tradition, the voices were cleared with some well know sea shanties.

John Owen, Ex-President of the Rugby Football Union
12 October 2010. John Owen, Ex-President of the Rugby Football Union Ivor Allonby introduced his guest, John Owen, the immediate past President of the England RFU. John last spoke to the club at the Charter Night in 2008. On this occasion we had a number of guests to listen to a very entertaining speech. Since his last visit he has spent a year as President of the RFU and told the club of his experiences during that year. John Owen was born and bred in Shap, and after a career as a police officer, became involved in the management of rugby football. His Presidential year was marked with difficulties, the drugs issue at Bath, and the Bloodgate scandal, to name two. Although he had high profile experiences with royalty and the heads of other Rugby Football Unions, the performance of the England team was disappointing. John is now working with the Injured Players Foundation and is chairman elect for 2011. He is also involved in the 2015 World Cup in England which is expected to make profits in excess of £30M, all of which will be used in support of community rugby. John also gives the support of the RFU to Help for Heroes, and invites injured servicemen to every match. Peter Davy gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the club and its guests, praising John for rising to the dizzy heights of the RFU through hard work and not patronage.
